This has been yet another week of plentiful news, with discussions around the EU taking place, with Prime Minister David Cameron and his talks in Brussels, and the Queens visit to Germany. It has also been a busy one for SMEs with many initiatives underway offering up new opportunities for businesses, from offering advice for start-ups, to SMEs benefitting from Government schemes to enable them to have better broadband connections. Please see below a roundup of key stories this week:

  • More than 25,000 UK SMEs across 50 cities have participated in the Government’s Broadband Connection voucher scheme. The scheme, which allows businesses to apply for grants of up to £3,000, is looking to benefit SMEs hugely by covering the costs of installing faster and better broadband for their business, enabling businesses to be better connected.
  • This week Twitter released a study which is set to help SMEs increase their visibility through analysing data activity of Twitter users and how they interact with brands on the social media platform. Twitter’s six month study found that more than 80 per cent of users mentioned a brand in their tweets as well as the influence of these interactions. As a result, Twitter has published a guide, specific to SMEs and how to make the most out of the platform when connecting with their target audience.
  • And finally, StartUp Britain kicked off this week, touring the UK on a double-decker bus. The tour commenced in London’s Canary Wharf, and will be travelling around the UK, coming to a close in August in Inverness. Packed with some of the UK’s leading business people, these experts will be available to offer advice to grow SMEs and fuel entrepreneurship across Britain.
