It’s a well-known fact that the PC market is shrinking. By IDC’s reckoning, traditional PC sales were down by 5.7% year-on-year in 2016. Desktops have been hit hardest – unless you’re an avid gamer, consumers are shifting to mobile as their primary device.
The same is true in the enterprise space. In our 2016 ‘Fit for Digital’ survey, 98% of the 1,200 c-suite decision makers studied said digital has disrupted their organisation, and in no way is that clearer than with the emergence of the mobile workforce.
As our habits as consumers bleed into the workplace, and as organisations become more agile to adapt to the digital tide, mobility has become a top priority for organisations.
How should the enterprise respond to the mobile workforce?
Here are our top tips:
1. Don’t compromise
The mobile and hybrid device market has become about who can make the thinnest, lightest, flashiest device.

Look for devices with plenty of storage, a full-sized HDMI and, crucially, a USB Type C port. This technology is just catching on, but it’s fast becoming the new standard and is powerful enough to connect all the peripherals you want to your laptop.
All devices need an element of portability. 3. Combat device envy

The best way to combat this is to not get distracted by appearances and explore device portfolios that are uniform in style to avoid the green eyed monster.
4. Choose your own device
BYOD may be the talk of the town, but choose your own device (CYOD) initiatives are where we’re seeing growth in the enterprise space.
Every worker is different; the sales guy has very different needs to the finance team, particularly in terms of portability and power needs.
The modern workforce has an element of expectation when it comes to technology in the workplace, and offering a range of devices from which each group is able to choose the device that best suits their working needs gives the most satisfaction.
5. Stay secure on the move
A mobile workforce can mean a headache for the IT department when security is concerned. The best way to mitigate risk is to invest in devices that have biometrics technology built in, whether it be fingerprint authentication or our PalmSecure palm vein technology.
